About Best Produce Picker
Picking the ripest fruit or the freshest vegetable at the grocery store is a small skill that pays off every week. Best Produce Picker is a free browser tool that helps you compare up to three produce photos side-by-side and see which one best matches the color profile of the variety you're shopping for.
How it works
Choose a category (Fruits or Vegetables), tap the item you're shopping for, and pick the specific variety. The app loads a color profile calibrated for the best version of that variety — a Blood Orange has a very different "ripe" color than a Navel Orange, and we treat them as different targets. Snap a photo with your phone's camera and the app scores how close each shot is to the ideal.
Beyond color
Color isn't everything. Every item in the picker also shows non-color tips — firmness, weight, field spot, stem condition, sound — that experienced grocers use to sort the best from the rest. Read the tips below the camera before you squeeze.
